The Vermont State Police is actively searching for a missing, vulnerable adult in the Windsor County town of Cavendish, 83-year-old Pieter van Schaik. He was last seen at about 1200 hrs. hiking in a wooded area near Tarbell Hill Road and Oscarson Road, known as the Albert C. Lord State Forest, in Cavendish, when he became separated from his party.

 

van Schaik is believed to be on foot in the area. VSP asks members of the public to check their property and any outbuildings for van Schaik or signs he might have been in the area.

 

van Schaik is about 5 feet 9 inches tall, weighs 165 pounds, and has white hair and brown eyes. He was last seen wearing hiking boots, a blue jacket, blue baseball cap, black jeans and a blue backpack. Two photographs of van Schaik are attached to this release.

 

This disappearance is not considered suspicious, but there are concerns for his welfare. Anyone who sees van Schaik or has information on his possible whereabouts should call VSP’s Westminster Barracks at 802-722 -4600.

SUMMARY OF INCIDENT: On September 25, 2026, at 1617 hours the Vermont State Police St Albans Barracks received a report of Aneda Ross, age 55 of Highgate, threatening to shoot a neighbor. The Vermont State Police were unable to make contact with Ross at her residence. Ross then began calling the Vermont State Police dispatch center over 20 times to yell at, harass and make lewd comments to the dispatchers answering the phone. Ross was put through to the on-duty Patrol Sergeant who advised her that she was only to call the dispatch phone number if she needed assistance and not to threaten and harass the dispatchers answering the phone. Ross then threatened to shoot the Patrol Sergeant. Ross was advised that she would be charged with criminal threatening for making that statement. After that conversation Ross continued to leave 5 harassing and lewd voicemails for the Patrol Sergeant.

On September 30, 2026, Ross was located at her residence and issued a citation for Criminal Threatening x2 and Disorderly Conduct by telephone x 2.

On October 4, 2026, at 1530 hours Aneda Ross again left 7 harassing and lewd voicemails for the same Patrol Sergeant. Ross again called the Vermont State Police dispatch center to harass and make lewd comments to the dispatchers. Ross will face two additions charges for Disorderly Conduct by telephone for these incidents.

SUMMARY OF CRASH:

On 10/04/2026, at approximately 11:01 AM, the Vermont State Police received a report of a single-vehicle crash into the guardrail on Vermont Route 78 near Carter Hill Road in the Town of Highgate. Troopers from the St. Albans Barracks responded to the scene and identified the operator as 29-year-old Jaden Burnor. Burnor was transported to the Northwestern Medical Center for treatment of his injuries.

 

At the Northwestern Medical Center, Troopers observed that Burnor had indicators of impairment and had been operating with a criminally suspended license. Burnor was issued a criminal citation for suspicion of Driving Under the Influence and Operating after suspension or revocation of license. He is scheduled to appear in the Vermont Superior Court, Franklin County, Criminal Division on 12/15/2026, at 8:00 AM to answer to the above charges. He was later transported to the University of Vermont Medical Center for a higher level of care.

SUMMARY OF CRASH:

 

On October 3, 2026, at approximately 0734 hours, Troopers from the St. Johnsbury Barracks responded to a reported single vehicle crash on Interstate 91 N near MM105 in Newbury. The operator, Carolyn Lyford, failed to maintain her lane resulting in her entering the median and striking a tree. The vehicle, a Jeep Renegade, suffered major damage after flipping onto its side.

 

The operator and passengers were able to extricate themselves from the vehicle. Troopers observed signs of impairment and conducted Standardized Field Sobriety Tests (SFST) on the operator. At the conclusion, Lyford was placed under arrest for suspicion of DUI Drugs and Negligent Operation.

SUMMARY OF CRASH:

On 10/3/2026, at approximately 0853 hours, Troopers from the Vermont State Police – Rutland Barracks were notified of a two-vehicle crash on VT RT 100, Pittsfield, Vermont.

Through investigation it was determined Operator #2 (Thygesen) was operating vehicle #2, traveling south on VT RT 100. Operator #1 (Sulham) was operating vehicle #1, traveling south on VT RT 100. Operator #2 (Thygesen) slowed down for another vehicle traveling at a slow rate of speed on VT RT 100. Operator #1 (Sulham), who was traveling behind vehicle #2, attempted braking but was unable to avoid colliding with vehicle #2.

The Vermont State Police were assisted on scene by Pittsfield Fire Department.

SUMMARY OF INCIDENT:

On the above date and time, Troopers from the Westminster State Police Barracks received numerous phone calls for a wrong-way driver in the area of I-91 NB MM 31.0, Rockingham (Windham County), Vermont. Troopers were able to locate and stop the vehicle at I-91 NB MM25.8. Troopers identified the operator as Jose Vazquez, 35, of Springfield, MA.  During the investigation, indicators of impairment were observed. Vazquez was arrested and transported to the Vermont State Police Westminster Barracks for processing. Vazquez was released with a criminal citation and is scheduled to appear in Vermont Superior Court, Windham Criminal Division, on 10/20/2026 at 0830 hours to answer to the above charge.
