At about 5 p.m. Tuesday, Oct. 8, 2025, members of the Quebec Provincial Police and the RCMP located Jean Claude Fauteux alive and well in St. Hermenegilde, Quebec. He was cleared medically in Canada and brought back to Canaan, Vermont, where he was reunited with his family.  

 

The Vermont State Police would like to thank all of the agencies involved in the search for Mr. Fauteux in Vermont and Canada.

 

 

***Initial news release, 7:25 p.m. Tuesday, Oct. 7, 2025***

On 10/07/2025, at approximately 1638 hours the Vermont State Police were notified Jean Claude Fauteux, 84, of Canaan VT was reported missing by family members. Fauteux was learned to have been last seen around 11:30 AM on 10/07 at his residence located on VT RT 114 in Canaan. Fauteux is described to be 5’5, 135lbs, brown eyes, bald on top with brown hair in the back. He is suspected to be wearing black pants, black logging boots, a blue and white long sleeve tee-shirt and possibly wearing a ball cap and glasses. There is no indication Fauteux is missing under suspicious circumstances; however, there are concerns for his welfare. Anyone who may have seen Fauteux or have any information is asked to call the state police at 802-334-8881.

Vermont State Police investigates suspicious death in Sheldon

 

SHELDON, Vermont (Wednesday, Oct. 8, 2025) — The Vermont State Police is investigating a suspicious death in the Franklin County town of Sheldon.

 

The investigation began early Tuesday morning, Oct. 7, 2025, when first responders were called to a home on Bedard Road for a report of a man who was unresponsive. Crews located the victim, later identified as 55-year-old Matthew Turner, and he was pronounced dead on scene. The victim’s body was brought to the Chief Medical Examiner’s Office in Burlington for an autopsy, which was completed Wednesday, Oct. 8. Cause and manner of death remain pending, but the medical examiner notified VSP that the death appears suspicious.

 

Members of the Vermont State Police Major Crime Unit, Bureau of Criminal Investigations, Crime Scene Search Team, Field Force Division and Victim Services Unit are handling the investigation.

SUMMARY OF CRASH: On 10/08/2025, at approximately 1333 hours, members of the Vermont State Police - Westminster Barracks responded to a report of a motor vehicle incident on Vermont Route 30 in Newfane, Vermont. Investigation revealed that a vehicle traveling north on VT Route 30 was struck by a falling tree while the vehicle was in transit. The vehicle sustained moderate damage as a result of the impact. The tree blocked the entirety of both travel lanes, causing a temporary closure of the roadway while emergency crews worked to clear debris and ensure safe travel. The road was reopened after a brief period. No injuries were reported. The operator was identified as Brittney S. Book, 52, of Townshend, Vermont. Assisting agencies: Newbrook Fire and Rescue, Vermont AOT, Windham County Sheriff's Department and Scott Brooks Towing.

ST. JOHNSBURY, Vermont (Wednesday, Oct. 8, 2025) — Search crews have finished their work at the Weidmann Electrical Technology campus in St. Johnsbury following a bomb threat, and nothing out of the ordinary was located.

 

Crews have cleared the scene, and the business will reopen.

 

The investigation into the threat is continuing.

SUMMARY OF CRASH:

 

On June 29, 2025, at approximately 1810 hours, Troopers from the St. Johnsbury Barracks responded to a two-vehicle crash on Railroad St in Newbury. Troopers arrived and determined Samuel Mattson was travelling west on Railroad St while driving a 2009 Harley Davidson FXDL. Mattson failed to navigate a corner and crossed the center line, entering the eastward lane of travel. Cole King was travelling east in his 2019 Chevrolet Silverado when Mattson entered his lane, resulting in a collision.

 

Troopers were assisted by members of Woodsville Ambulance and Wells River Fire Department. This crash remains under investigation and criminal charges are expected, pending the conclusion of the investigation.

On October 7th, 2025, at approximately 2150 hours, Troopers from the Vermont State Police – St. Albans Barracks were dispatched to a report of a single motor vehicle crash in the area of mile marker 111.8 on Interstate 89 Southbound in the town of Fairfax, VT. Troopers responded to the scene and located a 2005 Ford F-150 that had left the roadway and sustained damage to its front end.

 

Preliminary investigation established that the operator of the 2005 Ford F-150 was Tyree Canty (47) of Philadelphia, PA. Troopers established that Canty was wearing his seatbelt at the time of the crash and there was no airbag deployment. Canty was transported to Northwest Medical Center for suspected minor injuries.

 

The Vermont State Police was assisted at the scene of the crash by Townline Towing, AmCare Ambulance and St. Albans Fire Department.

On 10/06/25 at approximately 1708 hours, Troopers from the St Johnsbury Barracks were dispatched to a two-vehicle crash on Main St at Hemlock Ln in the Town of Lyndonville, Vermont. Upon arrival Troopers identified the operator of vehicle #1 as Therese Austin, and the operator of vehicle #2 as Marci Gadwah. The investigation showed that vehicle #1 was on Main St waiting to make a left turn into the apartment complex when it was rear ended by vehicle #2. No injuries were reported by either operator. While speaking with Higgins, Troopers detected multiple indicators of impairment.  After a roadside investigation, Higgins was arrested for suspicion of Driving Under the Influence and transported to the Stowe Police Department for processing.  Higgins was later issued a citation to appear at the Lamoille County Superior Court on October 22, 2025 at 0830 hours to answer to the charge of DUI #1.

The operator failed to stop, and the vehicle fled the area. A short time later, the vehicle was located in the rest area on U.S. Route 4 in the Town of Ira.

 

Troopers made contact with the operator, who was identified as Ruby Ianni (24) of Fair Haven, Vermont. During the interaction, Troopers observed multiple indicators of impairment. Ianni was subsequently taken into custody for suspicion of Driving Under the Influence and Attempting to Elude a Police Officer in a Grossly Negligent Manner.

 

Ianni was transported to the Vermont State Police Rutland Barracks for processing and later released with a citation to appear in Rutland County Superior Court – Criminal Division at a later date and time.

SUMMARY OF INCIDENT: On 10/07/2025, at approximately 1638 hours the Vermont State Police were notified Jean Claude Fauteux, 84, of Canaan VT was reported missing by family members. Fauteux was learned to have been last seen around 11:30 AM on 10/07 at his residence located on VT RT 114 in Canaan. Fauteux is described to be 5’5, 135lbs, brown eyes, bald on top with brown hair in the back. He is suspected to be wearing black pants, black logging boots, a blue and white long sleeve tee-shirt and possibly wearing a ball cap and glasses. There is no indication Fauteux is missing under suspicious circumstances; however, there are concerns for his welfare. On October 6, 2025, Troopers from the Vermont State Police – Rutland Barracks conducted a motor vehicle stop after observing a violation. Troopers identified the operator as Damian Backus (26) of Rutland City, Vermont.

 

During the course of the investigation, Troopers observed indicators of impairment. Backus was subsequently taken into custody for suspicion of Driving Under the Influence and transported to the Rutland Barracks for processing.

 

At the conclusion of processing, Backus was released with a citation to appear at the Rutland County Superior Court – Criminal Division at a later date and time to answer to the charge of DUI.

SUMMARY OF INCIDENT:

As search efforts continued Tuesday, Oct. 7, 2025, for 62-year-old Rodney Davis of Wallingford, the Vermont State Police Search and Rescue Team located human remains in the woods at about 12:30 p.m. in the vicinity of Davis’ home on Nash Drive. Positive identification was unable to be made.

 

The body was recovered and will be transported to the Chief Medical Examiner’s Office in Burlington for an autopsy to confirm identity and determine the cause and manner of death.

 

This investigation remains active and ongoing, and no further information is available at this time.

 

 

***Initial news release, 9:50 p.m. Friday, Sept. 19, 2025***

On September 19, 2025, troopers from the Vermont State Police – Rutland Barracks were notified of a suspicious incident on Nash Dr in the Town of Wallingford, Vt.

 

Investigation into the incident indicated that Rodney Davis caused serious injury to a family or household member. When attempting to contact Davis, Troopers learned that he was in possession of a firearm and on foot in the forested area to the East of Nash Dr. in the Town of Wallingford.

 

Troopers responded to the area and established telephone communication with Davis, who spoke with police though refused to exit the woods. Contact with Davis ended as it is believed that his cellular phone lost power. Police were unable to reestablish communication with Davis and his current location is unknown. Davis is 5’11” and approximately 185 pounds, brown hair and blue eyes. His current attire is unknown.

 

The Vermont State Police urge anyone with information about the location of Rodny Davis to contact the Rutland State Police Barracks by calling (802) 773-9101.

Vermont State Police locates body during search for missing boater in Somerset

 

SOMERSET, Vermont (Tuesday, Oct. 7, 2025) — During continued search efforts Tuesday afternoon, Oct. 7, 2025, for missing 74-year-old boater David Maynard of Wilmington, a kayaker on Somerset Reservoir notified Vermont State Police auxiliary troopers of a body in the water.

 

Crews responded to the area, recovered the body, and were able to make initial identification as Mr. Maynard. The body will be brought to the Chief Medical Examiner’s Office in Burlington for an autopsy to confirm identity and determine the cause and manner of death. This incident does not appear to be suspicious.

 

In addition to the first-response organizations listed below, participating agencies throughout the weeklong search included underwater recovery teams and aerial units from the Massachusetts and New York state police.

 

The Vermont State Police thanks the members of the public and numerous first-responder agencies that provided information and assisted in the search and recovery effort.

The Vermont State Police are searching for a missing boater at the Somerset Reservoir.

Late Monday evening, troopers from the Vermont State Police responded to a missing person report at the Somerset Reservoir. Family of David Maynard, 74, of Wilmington, Vermont, reported that he had taken his boat out on the reservoir and not returned. His car and empty trailer were located parked near the boat launch area. Police and fire personnel responded and checked the area. Neither David nor his boat were located. After the initial search last night, personnel continued to search the water and surrounding area all day today. Neither David nor his boat were located. The search will resume in the morning.

Involved in the search were members of the Vermont State Police Field Force, Auxiliary Unit, Search and Rescue, and Underwater Recovery Team; Vermont Fish and Game Wardens; U.S. Forrest Service; New York State Police; Wilmington Fire Department; and Whitingham Fire Department. Great River Hydro staff provided support for the search, and the Vermont State Police Victim Services Unit responded to assist the family.

David’s car is a 2002 silver Volkswagen Jetta; the boat is described as a 14-foot blue and white hulled Jon boat with a 20-30 HP engine and black trawling motor on the front.
