VIOLATION: Aggravated Assault, Reckless Endangerment

 

ACCUSED: Anthony Smith

AGE: 39

CITY, STATE OF RESIDENCE: Wardsboro, VT

 

 

SUMMARY OF INCIDENT: On 10/07/2026, at approximately 2251 hours, Troopers assigned to VSP-Westminster responded to a family fight in the area of Vermont Route 100, in the town of Wardsboro, Windham County, Vermont. When law enforcement units arrived on scene, Smith pointed a firearm at responding units and barricaded himself within the residence.

Smith refused to comply with law enforcement and remained barricaded within the residence. The Vermont State Police Tactical Services Unit and Crisis Negotiation Unit were activated. After multiple attempts to de-escalate the situation, Smith surrendered himself to law enforcement at approximately 0650 hours without incident. Smith was processed and the brought directly to Windham County Superior Court to answer to the above charges and lodged. 

 

Route 100 was closed for the duration of this incident; it was reopened at approximately 0715 hours.

 

Members from the Wilmington Police Department, Winhall Police Department, Dover Police Department and Windham County Sheriffs provided assistance throughout the incident.
