SUMMARY OF INCIDENT:

Following an investigation that began in early February, the Vermont State Police has cited Christopher Matott, 31, of Alburgh on suspicion of repeatedly physically assaulting and threatening a woman with whom he was in a relationship. Matott is a Winooski Police Department officer and is currently assigned to a Drug Enforcement Administration Task Force in Vermont.

The investigation began Feb. 6, 2020, when the state police was contacted by the Grand Isle County Sheriff's Department after sheriff’s deputies served an Extreme Risk Protection Order that had been taken out against Matott. The Sheriff’s Department requested that state police investigate the allegations.

The 29-year-old victim met with detectives from the state police and provided a statement along with other supporting evidence. The victim detailed a series of physical assaults that included strangling, being restrained by force, receiving repeated threats of death and violence, and being prevented from leaving a room or residence. According to the victim and the evidence she provided, the assaults took place on at least four occasions from July 2019 and to January 2020 at a home in Alburgh and a hotel in South Burlington.

The state police has worked closely with the office of Grand Isle County State’s Attorney Douglas DiSabito throughout the investigation. On Wednesday, Feb. 19, 2020, the State’s Attorney's Office reviewed the state police affidavit and requested a citation be issued to Matott for the violations noted above. Matott was ordered to appear at 12:45 p.m. Thursday in the Criminal Division of Vermont Superior Court in North Hero to answer the charges.

Following service of the Extreme Risk Protection Order, Matott’s firearms were seized, and he was suspended from duty with the Winooski Police Department. Further questions regarding his employment status should be directed to WPD.

No further information is currently available. The affidavit of probable cause will be filed with the court and made public following arraignment.
