SUMMARY OF INCIDENT:

On February 18, 2020 at 3:23 PM the St Albans fire department was dispatched to a reported structure fire at 30 Simonds Road in St Albans Bay.  Fire crews were able to quickly extinguish the fire, limiting the damage to the seasonal camp as well as other camps nearby.  Chief Harold Cross requested assistance from the Vermont State Police Fire and Explosion Investigation Unit to determine the origin and cause of this fire event.

Investigators began a scene examination after the fire was suppressed, but due to the fading light returned to the scene on February 19, 2020 to complete the examination.  Investigators from the Fire and Explosion Unit were aided by an investigator from the St Albans City Fire Department.  The origin of the fire was in the area of the bathroom, under the floor in the crawlspace.  The most likely cause of the fire was determined to be an electrical tape heater wrapped around the water supply pipe.

There were no injuries sustained during the fire event, during suppression efforts, or during the investigation.  No one had been living in or using the seasonal camp around the time of the fire.  The camp sustained approximately $40,000.00 in damage.
