SUMMARY OF CRASH:

On 12/19/19 at approximately 16:45 hours, Troopers from the Vermont State Police

Shaftsbury Barracks responded to a report of a double motor vehicle crash on

Route 7A, located in the Town of Shaftsbury, VT. Investigation revealed V#1,

operated by David F. Merriam, attempted to back into a driveway despite having

numerous motor vehicles following. V#2, operated by Francis E. Tilley, collided

with V#1.

A license check revealed Merriam's privilege to operate a motor vehicle was

criminally suspended in the State of Vermont. Additionally, Merriam denied

having operated the motor vehicle at the time of the crash. Statements provided

by witnesses confirmed Merriam was driving the vehicle and fled the scene

immediately after the collision.

Merriam was issued a citation to appear in Bennington County Superior Court on

March 30, 2020 at 08:15 hours to answer to the charges of Criminal DLS, a

violation of Title 23 VSA 674, as well as providing False Information to a

Police Officer, a violation of Title 13 VSA 1754.
