SUMMARY OF INCIDENT:

At approximately 10:00 PM on 10-31-2019, the Royalton Fire Department was notified of a structure fire at Eaton’s Sugar house located at 5894 Vt Rt 14 Royalton, VT. This is a working, locally owned family restaurant that has been a focal point in the community for several years.  Upon arrival the fire department found heavy fire in the rear and center portions of the building and began attacking the fire. They also received addition assistance from Bethel, Sharon, Barnard, East Randolph and Randolph Center Fire Departments. No injuries were reported.

Due to the suspicious nature, and an incident earlier in the evening of the front steps of the building being set on fire utilizing gasoline that had been witnessed, Royalton FC Paul Brock called and requested the response of the Vermont Fire and Explosion Investigation Unit to assist him in determining the origin and cause of the fire. Members of the unit responded on 11-01-2019 at 0730 while the fire department preserved the scene.

Members of the unit conducted a scene investigation which included the use of an Accelerant Detection Canine Team. As a result of the investigation this fire is classified as UNDETERMINED but suspicious. The building is considered to be a total loss.
