SUMMARY OF INCIDENT:

On November 03, 2019 Lowell Fire Department responded to 2798 Hazen's Notch Road for a report of a fully engulfed structure fire. Upon arrival, firefighters encountered 1.5 story log cabin to be fully engulfed in fire and the roof had already collapsed.  A neighbor had noticed the fire at approximately 9:15 pm and then notified the fire department.

As part of his scene assessment, Lowell Fire Chief Calvin Allen contacted the VT Dept of Public Safety Fire & Explosion Investigation Unit for assistance in determining the origin and cause of this fire. It was reported the structure was unoccupied and still under construction.

Members of the Fire and Explosion Investigation Unit responded to the scene in the morning of  November 04, 2019 and initiated an origin and cause investigation.  It is believed that this fire occurred shortly before the neighbor first noticed the fire at approximately 9:15 pm as the structure was fully involved and the roof was collapsing.

The cause of the fire is still under investigation, however, it appears that there was direct human involvement. This fire is considered suspicious.

There were no reported injuries, however the building is considered a total loss.

Michael LaCourse at the Derby Barracks at 802-334-8881 or by contacting the Vermont Arson Tip Award Program(VATAP) hotline at 1-800-32-ARSON(1-800-322-7766).
