NEWS RELEASE

CASE#:  19A304038
RANK/TROOPER FULL NAME:  Trooper Mathew Nadeau
STATION:  Middlesex
CONTACT#:  802-229-9191

DATE/TIME:  Multiple
INCIDENT LOCATION:  Sugar Mountain Farm, Orange

Over the past two weeks, troopers from the Middlesex Barracks have responded to various calls for service at the Sugar Mountain Farm in Orange regarding a livestock issue involving pigs. Troopers originally were called on 8/20/19 for a reported animal neglect issue, which was determined to be unfounded. However, loose animals were seen wandering on the property both inside and outside of pens and in the roadway. In the two days following the original call, the Vermont State Police received two additional calls for pigs in the roadway in this area, and troopers responded based on those reports.

Since the original call, the Vermont State Police has been in contact with the farm owner; the town of Orange; the Vermont Agency of Agriculture, Food and Markets; and the Vermont Attorney General's Office of Legal Counsel to the Agency of Agriculture in an attempt to facilitate a reasonable outcome for all parties in this matter.

Additionally, since the original call, troopers have responded to the Sugar Mountain Farm for reports of vandalism, a burglary, and other suspicious incidents that may have been perpetrated intentionally, leading to the escape of the pigs from the property. Troopers are actively investigating these incidents. Anyone with information is asked to contact the Middlesex Barracks at 802-229-9191.

The Vermont State Police has and will continue to investigate any crimes associated with this incident and assist all parties involved in a collaborative effort to solve this issue.
