SUMMARY OF CRASH:

Troopers from the Williston and Middlesex State Police Barracks responded to a crash involving a motorcycle and pedestrian that occurred on Vermont Route 108S at Smugglers Notch in Cambridge.   John Mondou, 68, of Quebec was operating a motorcycle southbound on VT108, in the notch, when he lost control while making a sharp left turn, on a steep down-hill grade.   The motorcycle struck 22 year old Pierre Chenel from France who was walking along the side of the road.  Chenel is presently a student who is residing in Montreal.

Mondou and Chenel were both transported to the University of Vermont Medical Center.   Mondou sustained minor, non-incapacitating injuries.  Chenel was admitted to the intensive care unit with serious head injuries.  Chenel’s condition was reported as critical but stable.

Vermont Route 108 at Smugglers Notch in Cambridge was closed for approximately two hours due to the crash and investigation.   Troopers were assisted at the scene by Stowe and Cambridge EMS, the Stowe Police Department and Smugglers Notch Security.

Based on the initial investigation it does not appear that speed or impairment were factors in this crash.  The cause of the crash remains under investigation.
