SUMMARY OF INCIDENT:

At approximately 0132 hours on 08/02/18, a fire was reported at a residence located at 31 East Street in the City of Rutland. The structure is located at the corner of East Street and Terrill Street in Rutland City. The residence was later identified as an abandoned building owned by the City of Rutland. The two story house was unoccupied and is in the process of being sold.  Rutland City Fire Department responded to the scene and first responding units encountered fire on the siding along the southwest corner of the building. Fire was contained to the exterior of the building.

During his assessment of the fire, Rutland City Fire Chief James Larsen contacted the VT Department of Public Safety Fire & Explosion Investigation Unit for assistance with the origin and cause determination. Investigators from the VT State Police and VT Division of Fire Safety responded to the scene during the morning of 08/02/18 and began an investigation. It was determined the fire originated on the siding along the southwest corner of the building and was intentionally set.

There was another suspicious fire at this residence in October of 2017, which also originated on the exterior of the building.
