SUMMARY OF CRASH:

On August 11, 2018 at approximately 1131 hours, Vermont State Police responded to a motor vehicle crash involving two motorcycles and a passenger car on Vermont Route 100 in Waitsfield, Vermont. Subsequent investigation indicated Operator 1, Daniel Nietupski of Winooski, VT, was traveling North on RT 100 when he crossed over the center line into oncoming traffic. Nietupski stated he was looking down, lighting a cigarette. Nietupski’s vehicle struck two motorcyclists from Quebec, Jean Lachoix and Guy Gagnon, who were both traveling South on RT 100.

A third motorcyclist arrived on scene moments after the crash. He was carrying a tourniquet with him and applied it to Gagnon’s leg, potentially saving his life.

Lachoix was transported by Mad River Valley Ambulance to Central Vermont Medical Center due to non-life-threatening injuries. Gagnon was transported by the DHART helicopter to Dartmouth-Hitchcock Medical Center due to severe trauma to his leg.

Nietupski was placed under arrest for Grossly Negligent Operation and transported to the Middlesex State Police Barracks. He was processed and released on a citation to appear in the Washington County Superior Court, Criminal Division on September 20, 2018 at 0830 hours.
