Date/Time: May 12, 2018 at approximately 6:00 PM

Incident Location:  39 Page Road, Underhill, VT

Victim/Owner of Property:  Rodney & Terry Page

Summary: On May 12, 2018 at approximately 6:00 PM a fire was called into the 911 Emergency Dispatch Center.  Underhill-Jericho Fire Department was dispatched to a fire at 39 Page Road, which was discovered to be a sugar house and the brush surrounding it.  The Underhill-Jericho Fire Chief, Mat Champlin, requested an origin and cause investigation for the fire as the building did not have any electricity or competent ignition sources which would initiate a fire.  Fire fighters also located wooden matches in a stream near the sugar house which they were able to preserve as evidence.  Fire investigators from the Department of Public Safety Fire Investigation Unit responded immediately to conduct an investigation.  The origin of the fire was determined to be dried leaves and brush near the sugar house.  Once the fire began it spread to the sugar house, which had collapsed about a year ago and was no longer in use.  The fire quickly spread to the surrounding brush and dried leaves and continued to spread from the open field through the wooded area behind the sugar house.  Several local fire departments responded to help extinguish the blaze including Cambridge, Fairfax, Essex and Essex Junction, Williston and the Vermont Air National Guard’s Fire Department.  The fire was extinguished after several hours.  The sugar house was completely consumed in the blaze and a few wooded acres surrounding it were also burned.  The fire was determined to have been caused by juveniles playing with matches near the stream, and accidentally lighting the dry brush on fire.  No criminal charges will be filed at this time.  Anyone having additional information regarding this case is asked to please contact Detective Sergeant Todd Ambroz of the Vermont State Police at 802-878-7111.
