FATAL FIRE / HOMICIDE / SUSPECT IDENTIFIED

St. Johnsbury VT -  On May 15, 2018, at about 10:26 PM, the St. Johnsbury Fire Department responded to a residential structure fire at 319 Crepeault Hill Road in St. Johnsbury. The St. Johnsbury Fire Department chief requested assistance from the Department of Public Safety Fire Investigation Unit. Detectives from the Vermont State Police and assistant fire marshals from the Vermont Division of Fire Safety responded to the scene in the early morning hours of May 16th to initiate an origin/cause investigation. During this fire investigation, human remains were located within the burnt debris. Detectives from the Vermont State Police Major Crime Unit and Bureau of Criminal Investigation were called in to investigate the death. 
 
The Office of the Chief Medical Examiner identified the human remains as those of Timothy Persons, 52, of the 319 Crepeault Hill Road address.  The Office of the Chief Medical Examiner later concluded that the cause of death was blunt force injury to the head and has ruled the manner of death as homicide. 
 
On Saturday, May 19th, detectives with Vermont State Police Criminal Division interviewed Allen Draper, 30, of St. Johnsbury. Draper was found to be in violation of his probation. He was subsequently taken into custody by Probation and Parole that evening and is currently incarcerated at this time. Draper has been identified by detectives as the person who caused Timothy Persons' death, and he will be arraigned in Caledonia County Superior Court – Criminal Division on May 22, 2018, at 1:00 PM.  A photo of Draper is attached.  Draper will be facing charges of 1st degree murder; 1st degree arson; assault; robbery; false information to police (3 counts); and habitual offender.
