Incident Location: 2106 VT Rte 14, Calais, VT

Owner of Property: Ernie Laplant, age 51

Summary: On April 19th, 2018 at 9:45 AM a fire was observed by passing motorists on VT Route 14 in the Town of Calais.  Three fire departments were dispatched to the structure fire, which was later discovered to be a two bay garage with a loft above it.  The building was completely engulfed in flames when the Woodbury, Plainfield, and East Montpelier Fire Departments arrived on scene.  The Woodbury Fire Chief, Paul Cerutti, requested an origin and cause investigation for the fire as nobody was home at the time the fire occurred.  The garage, estimated to have been built in the mid 1950’s, was completely consumed in the blaze and considered a total loss.  In addition to all of the homeowners personal tools and property being burned, Mr. Laplant also lost a 2016 GMC pickup truck.  The fire scene was examined by fire investigators from the Department of Public Safety Fire Investigation Unit.  At this time the origin and cause are still under investigation and considered undetermined.  There were no injuries in this fire nor did the primary residence receive any damage at all.  Anyone having any information regarding this fire is asked to please contact Detective Sergeant Todd Ambroz of the Vermont State Police at 802-229-9191.
