SUMMARY OF CRASH:  State Police at the St Albans Barracks were alerted by 911 of a three car crash on I-89 near the port of entry in the town of Highgate, Vermont.  Investigation conducted by Vermont State Troopers revealed that Operator 1 (Heidi Young) had been operating under the influence of alcohol when she attempted to cross the Canadian border at the Highgate POE. The Port of Entry had been experiencing a high volume of vehicles entering Canada, and had backed up approximately ½ a mile this day. As operator 1 (Young) approached the stopped line of traffic, she failed to slow down and impacted with vehicle 2. Vehicle 2 then launched forward and crashed into the back of vehicle 3.

At the time of the crash, vehicle 1 was occupied by 3 juveniles, and vehicle 2 contained 2 juveniles. All occupants of the vehicles involved reported no injuries. Vehicles 1 and 2 were towed from the scene as a result of the crash. On scene, VSP was assisted by members of Swanton PD and Border Patrol. Heidi Young was arrested and released on a citation to appear before the Franklin County Superior Court on 08/28/2017 at 1300 hours for charges of DUI and Child Endangerment.
