SUMMARY OF CRASH:

On 08/11/2017 at  0159 hours, State Police were notified of a two vehicle crash on Interstate 89 at miler marker 59.50 in the town of Middlesex, Vermont. Upon arrival, vehicle #1 was identified as a 2006 Chevy Silverado pick-up truck being operated by Jesse Whitney, 24, of Vergennes, VT. Vehicle #2 was identified as a 2016 Freightliner Box Truck being operated by James Giroux, 53, of Barre, VT. Investigation revealed that both vehicles were traveling south on I89 in the travel lane. Whitney slowed his vehicle down while still traveling in the travel lane as he prepared to make an illegal turn into a U-turn. Whitney stated that he wanted to use the U-Turn to make a phone call. When Whitney made this maneuver he crossed the passing lane in front of Giroux. Giroux had already begun to maneuver into the passing lane to avoid Whitney as he slowed down.  Giroux collided with Whitney in the passing lane as he attempted to enter the U-Turn. Vehicle #1 rolled onto its passenger side as a result of the collision. Vehicle #1 sustained damage to the entire passenger side as well as the driver side. Vehicle #2 sustained damage to the passenger side front bumper. Whitney was ticketed for attempting to use a U-turn.
