The Vermont State Police - St. Albans Barracks was notified of an embezzlement circumstance involving the Isle La Motte Volunteer Fire Company funds/account and a former treasurer for the Fire Company. The former treasurer was identified as Scott Newman, who had been involved with the Isle La Motte Fire Company for more than fifteen years. As of the transfer of his treasurer responsibilities in January 2016, he has no longer been involved with the Fire Company.

During a segment of Newman's tenure as treasurer between approximately the years 2013 and 2016 he misappropriated the Fire Company's funds for his own personal use. While he was treasurer during that time he had exclusive access to the account; which is a practice that has since changed for this position at the inception of the new treasurer. The amount of money misappropriated is estimated at greater than $5000.00. At this juncture in the investigation information indicates Newman attempted to return the funds of the Fire Company equal to the amount that he misappropriated.
