INCIDENT:  Fire of an occupied residence

SUMMARY OF INCIDENT:  On June20, 2017 at approximately 2330 hrs. a 911 caller reported a fire at 640 Charleston Rd. in Brighton, VT.  Initial reports and witnesses advised the building was heavily involved in fire.  Upon arrival of the Brighton Fire Department and surrounding fire departments, the building was heavily engulfed in flames on all three floors and had started to collapse in spots.   

The Brighton Fire Chief contacted the Vermont State Police Fire Investigation Unit to request an origin and cause investigation for this fire. 

On the morning of June 21st, 2017 Detective Sr./Sergeant Thomas Williams, Det./Sgt. Steve Otis, Det./Sgt. Todd Ambrose, Det./Sgt. John MacCallum, and DFS Investigator Stan Baranowski began an examination of the scene.  The Vermont State Police Arson K9 accelerant detection team was also brought and utilized at the scene.  The cause of this fire is still under investigation.  The classification of this fire, at this time,  is undetermined. 

Nobody was injured in the fire, but the building is considered to be a total loss.  Nobody was home at the time of the fire.  Damage was estimated to be approximately $350,000.  Brighton Fire Department was assisted by the Newark and Charleston Fire Departments. 

Anyone having any information regarding this fire is urged to contact the Vermont State Police in Rutland at 802-773-9101, Detective Sr./Sergeant Thomas Williams, or by calling 1-800-322-7766 – The Vermont Arson Tip Award Program (VATAP).  Up to a $5000 reward will be paid for information which helps detect or prevent an arson fire.
