SUMMARY OF INCIDENT:

On 5/22/17 at approximately 1820 hours, VSP-Derby Troopers on patrol in Newport Center stopped a vehicle for multiple traffic violations on Route 105.  Indicators of impairment were detected from the operator, identified as Walter Stanton.  Stanton also informed the trooper he did not have a valid license, and was found by DMV record check not to have an adult operator’s license on file, as well as to be criminally suspended for multiple items.

Subsequent investigation, including sobriety exercises, indicated Stanton had been operating while under the influence of intoxicating liquor.  A PBT was not obtained.  Stanton was taken into custody for suspicion of DUI and Criminal-DLS, processed at the VSP-Derby Barracks, and released to a sober adult with a citation to appear in court.

Stanton’s vehicle was also found to be unregistered, uninsured, uninspected, and bearing registration plates not assigned to the vehicle.  The registration plates were seized and the vehicle was towed from the scene, and civil action is pending for the traffic violations.

Troopers were assisted by the Orleans County Sheriff’s Department.
