SUMMARY OF CRASH:

On 4/15/17 at approximately 1420 hours, the State Police observed two individuals walking on Interstate 89 in South Burlington.  The two individuals were walking north bound in the breakdown lane. While a trooper who was parked in the breakdown lane checked on the two individuals, a three vehicle crash occurred in the left lane at that location. The three involved vehicles were traveling north bound in line and collided when approaching the location of the trooper.  Vehicle one, a 2013 Nissan Altima operated by Michaela Ilie of Colchester, VT struck the rear end of vehicle two, a 2008 Ford Focus operated by Mark Lefluer of Alburgh, VT. As a result of this collision, vehicle three a 2015 Jeep Grand Cherokee operated by Sarah Jean of Westford, VT struck the rear end of vehicle one. No injuries resulted from the crash.  Two of the vehicles involved were towed from the scene due to disabling damage. There was a traffic slow down at the scene for approximately one hour as a result of the crash. Enforcement action is pending the outcome of the investigation.

The two pedestrians walking on the interstate were identified as 20 year old Kaigen Bessette and 19 year old Brianna Knox both of Winooski.  Bessette and Knox stated they were walking home from the University Mall. Both individuals were ticketed for a violation of T23 VSA1004 Interstate Highway Regulations.

During these investigations a secondary crash occurred, south of the first scene, in the northbound lane

at mile marker 89.3.  As a result of the traffic slow down, vehicle one a 2015 Audi A4 operated by Traci Hull of Fairfax rear ended vehicle two a 2005 Toyota Sienna operated by April Cootware of South Hero. Both vehicles were towed from the scene due to disabling damage.  The operator of vehicle one (Hull) was ticketed for T23 VSA1039 Following Too Closely.
