SUMMARY OF CRASH:

On March 30th, 2017 at approximately 0604 hrs, Troopers with the St. Albans Barracks were alerted via 911 of a male walking in the median Interstate 89 near Mile Marker 105, wearing a t-shirt and attempting to wave cars down.  Rescue was dispatched to the scene and the male was identified as Nicholas Plouffe (Age 26).  It was determined that Plouffe crashed his vehicle on I89 approximately two hours earlier and was attempting to seek help. Plouffe was transported to UVM Medical Center for his injuries. The fire department, and VSP units located his vehicle at I89 MM105.8 in the median. After assessing the scene it was determined that Plouffe was traveling north on I89, left the traveled portion of the highway, crashed into a guard rail and rolled the vehicle several times into the median.

VSP units from Williston Barracks met with Plouffe at UVM Medical Center. Plouffe admitted to consuming alcohol prior to the crash. He was requested and provided a Preliminary Breath Test which showed a 0.126% BAC at approximately 0753 hours.

Alcohol is believed to be a factor in the motor vehicle crash.  Plouffe was processed for DUI.  The case is still active and under investigation, pending results from the blood test.
