SUMMARY OF INCIDENT:

On February 4, 2017 at approximately 0017 hours, the West Burke Volunteer Fire Department was notified of a garage fire on Brook Road in West Burke, Vermont.  The involved property was later identified as 1568 Brook Road.  It was determined that the property was vacant and did not have power.  Fire damage to the detached garage was minimal and the fire department was able to prevent the structure from being completely consumed by fire.

The Vermont State Police Fire Investigation Unit was subsequently notified of this incident and began an investigation in conjunction with the Division of Fire Safety.  As a result of the investigation, the Vermont State Police Fire Investigation Unit arrested two males identified as; eighteen (18) year old Damian Wilson and a seventeen (17) year old juvenile, who was a junior volunteer firefighter at the time of this incident, for First Degree Arson.  Both males were provided citations to appear in court on later dates.

The investigation revealed that the males allegedly made several attempts to burn the garage utilizing various materials and an incendiary implement commonly referred to as a Molotov cocktail.  These attempts were eventually successful in starting at least two areas of fire origin within the garage.
