SUMMARY OF INCIDENT:

On 03-12-2017 at approximately 1100 hrs the Stowe Fire Department responded to a reported structure fire at 51 Notch Brook Road in Stowe. An occupant of the building, a commercial residence, had walked over to the store nearby and asked the clerk to call 911 and report the fire. Upon the first arrival of fire personnel they found the garage, which was attached to the main building, to be heavily engulfed in flames and progressing towards the occupied portions of the building. All occupants were in the process of vacating their rented rooms and gathering belongings.  Everyone was safely evacuated and fire fighters gained control of the fire and prevented it from advancing into some portions of the building. The property was heavily damaged by the fire and no injuries were reported. Damages were estimated at approximately $500,000.

The Asst Fire Chief of Stowe FD, John Schnee, contacted the Vermont State Police/Fire Investigative Unit and requested an origin and cause investigation of the fire after gathering some information about the fire and the residence, which had not been occupied at the time of the fire. He did not find the fire to be suspicious but due to the displacement of approximately 24 guests and the size of the property  that further investigation would be warranted.  Members of the Fire Investigative Unit responded on 03-13-2017 at 0900 hrs to examine the scene. .

The Investigators have determined that the fire cause was accidental and was in the furnace room located within the garage where fire was first scene by first responders.
