SUMMARY OF INCIDENT:

On 03-19-2017 at approximately 1233hrs the Royalton Fire Department responded to a reported smoke at a residence located at 354 Happy Hollow Road in Royalton. A neighbor had been alerted to smoke coming from the property by his grandson who was playing outside. Upon the first arrival of fire personnel they found the rear portion of the single family residence to be heavily engulfed in flames. It was determined that the owner was not home. The property was heavily damaged by the fire and no injuries were reported. Damages were estimated at approximately $200,000.  The Fd was able to gain control of the fire and prevent the front portion of the home from being consumed.

The Fire Chief of Royalton Stowe FD, Paul Brock, contacted the Vermont State Police Fire Investigative Unit and requested an origin and cause investigation of the fire as he was unsure of the cause and the building was not occupied at the time of the fire. He did not find the fire to be suspicious. Members of the Fire Investigative Unit responded on 03-20-2017 at 0900 hrs to examine the scene.

The Investigators have determined that the fire cause was accidental and originated in the furnace room located within the rear portion of the residence.  Anyone with questions in regards to the fire may contact Division of Fire Safety Investigator Chris Boyd, who is handling this investigation, at his office at 802/879-2306.
