UPDATE:

Joshua Bittner passed away at UVM Medical Center during the late afternoon hours on 03/03/17. 

An autopsy is scheduled to be performed as the investigation into this matter remains on-going.

SUMMARY OF INCIDENT:

 

Around 2155 hours, Vermont State Police were notified by Department of

Corrections staff at the Northern State Correctional Facility in Newport, VT of

an inmate that had been found hanging in his cell by a cellmate. Staff at

Northern State Correctional Facility intervened, providing emergency medical

care. The inmate, Joshua Bittner, age 26, of Fairfax, VT was first transported

to North Country Hospital and later to UVM Medical Center for further treatment.

Presently Bittner remains in critical condition at UVM Medical Center. Early

indications are that the hanging was a self-inflicted event, though this matter

remains under investigation.
