SUMMARY OF INCIDENT:

On 03-14-2017 at approximately 8:46 pm the Newport City Fire Department responded to a report of smoke in the area of Raymond Avenue. At 8:47 pm they were upgraded to a fully involved structure fire at 54 Raymond Avenue after arrival of the Newport Police Department and them finding a home engulfed in flames. Upon the first arrival of fire personnel they found the residence to be unoccupied and fire was coming through the center portions of the roof of the house and heavily engulfing the garage and home. The Fire Chief requested assistance from Derby Line Fire and had Newport Ambulance stage in case needed. The fire department went into a defensive attack of the fire and gained control of it approximately 2 hours later. Damages were estimated at approximately $350,000.00 and the property is considered to be a total loss.  No injuries were reported.

The Fire Chief of Newport City FD, Jamie LeClair, contacted the Vermont State Police/Fire Investigative Unit and requested an origin and cause investigation of the fire after gathering some information about the fire, which had not been unoccupied at the time of the fire.  Members of the Fire Investigative Unit responded on 03-15-2017 at 0900 hrs to examine the scene.

The Investigators have determined that the fire cause was undetermined at this time. Anyone with information or who may have been in the area at the time of the fire or in the hours before it, would please contact Det. Sgt. Otis at 802/722-4600 or may call the Vermont State Police at the Derby Barracks at 802/334-8881.
