SUMMARY OF CRASH:

Troopers from the Williston Barracks responded to a multi-vehicle crash with injuries on Ethan Allen Highway (US-7) in the Town of Charlotte.  This multi-vehicle crash occurred in the northbound lanes of travel north of the F-5 Intersection, in the area of Horsford’s Nursery.  A vehicle operated by 70 year old Edward Woodruff of Westport, New York was traveling southbound when it crossed the center line and sideswiped a northbound vehicle driven by 66 year old Patricia Richardson of Shrewsbury, Vermont.  Woodruff’s vehicle then continued and struck a second northbound vehicle driven by 55 year old Michelle Brick of Colchester, Vermont before striking a guardrail on the northbound shoulder.  Woodruff’s vehicle then collided head on with another northbound vehicle driven by 22 year old Ashley Francis of Milton, Vermont.  A northbound vehicle driven by Shannon Ryan of South Burlington, Vermont attempted to avoid both vehicles but struck the back of the vehicle driven by Francis.  A northbound vehicle driven by 47 year old Kathy Rivard of Morrisville, Vermont was struck and damaged by flying debris as a result of the final impact.

The Vermont State Police were assisted on-scene by the Shelburne Police Department.  Emergency Crews from Charlotte Fire & EMS, Shelburne Fire & EMS, the Ferrisburgh Fire Department and Vergennes EMS responded to the scene.

Operator Michelle Brick was extricated from her vehicle by members of the Charlotte and Shelburne Fire Departments.

Route 7 at the scene was closed for approximately two hours as a result of this crash.  Traffic was detoured around the scene.

Woodruff and Brick were admitted for further evaluation at the UVM Medical Center.

Based on the preliminary investigation it does not appear that excessive speed or road conditions were a factor in this crash.  At the time of this press release Operator Edward Woodruff was being processed at the UVM Medical Center for suspicion of DUI.  Woodruff provided a preliminary breath sample of .077% BAC at the UVM Medical Center after the crash.  The exact cause of this accident remains under investigation.
