CASE#: Numerous MV Crashes
STATION: VSP Williston
CONTACT#: 802-878-7111

DATE/TIME: 01/24/17 between 1630 and 2200 hours
TOWN: Williston, South Burlington, Colchester, Winooski
WEATHER: Mixed Precip./lite rain
ROAD CONDITIONS: Ice

SUMMARY OF CRASH:
On 01/24/17, between the hours of 1630 and 2200 hours, Troopers from the VSP Williston Barracks along with Williston Police Dept., South Burlington Fire and Police Dept. and Colchester Fire Dept. responded to approx. (13) separate crashes due to deteriorating weather and road conditions in the greater Chittenden County area.

The primary roadway(s) affected were Interstate 89 NB/SB just south of Exit #13  where Troopers investigated a multi vehicle crash involving a tractor trailer truck and (7) vehicles. Based on initial statements collected, Troopers have determined that vehicle(s) traveling NB on I89 encountered ice covered roadways just south of Exit #13 and collided with each other prior to coming to a stop in the roadway.  A tractor trailer truck observed this action and upon attempted to avoid colliding with those vehicles  collided with two other vehicles before coming to a stop in the NB passing lane.  Other NB vehicles approaching this area also attempted to stop but in doing so, slid into each other causing both NB lanes of travel to be blocked.

Significant traffic delays were encountered due to the NB lanes being blocked which resulted in (3) additional secondary crashes prior to the Exit #13 scene.

Deteriorated road conditions also lead to (2) other crashes on the SB side of I89 in the same area.

The Vermont State Police are still actively working on vetting out the specific details of these crashes and will release more information when it becomes available.  VSP can confirm that only one minor injury was reported in tonights incidences.
