SUMMARY OF INCIDENT:

On January 23, 2017 at approximately 2231 hours, a concerned citizen contacted VT 911 reporting a vehicle operating erratically on VT Route 3 and Business Route 4 in Rutland Town. The caller reported this vehicle nearly struck her vehicle head-on. Troopers located the vehicle a short time later, traveling on Business Route 4 in West Rutland. Troopers attempted to stop the vehicle to determine if the operator was impaired. The vehicle failed to stop for state police and a motor vehicle pursuit began. The vehicle fled north on West Proctor Road into the Town of Proctor. Rutland City Police officers assisted with the pursuit.

Troopers and city police officers continued to pursue this vehicle through the village of Proctor. The vehicle’s operator traveled at speeds up to 60 mph in village streets with no regard for marked lanes or other traffic. While attempting to negotiate a corner, the fleeing vehicle struck a Rutland City Police cruiser which was involved in the pursuit. The operator failed to stop and continued on village streets until it stopped at the dead end of West Street. The operator fled on foot and was quickly located and arrested by troopers and city police officers.

The operator was identified as Chad E. Colton. His privilege to operate was found to be suspended in the State of Vermont. Colton was taken into custody and transported to the Vermont State Police Barracks in Rutland Town. Colton was processed for DUI. He was later lodged at the Marble Valley Regional Correctional Facility and is scheduled to appear at Vermont Superior Court, Criminal Division on January 24, 2017 at 1230 hours.
