SUMMARY OF CRASH:

On January 19, 2017 at approximately 0902 hours, Troopers from the  Vermont State

Police, New Haven Barracks responded to the report of a three car, motor vehicle crash on US Route 7

at the  intersection of South Middlebrook Road, Waltham.  Preliminary investigation indicates

Vehicle #2, operated by Kimball was attempting to make a left turn onto South Middlebrook

Road from US Route 7. The vehicle immediately behind Kimball identified as Vehicle #3,

operated by Gover, had seen this and had slowed down almost coming to a stop.

At approximately the same time Vehicle #1, operated by Smits, also traveling

northbound on US Route 7, saw a vehicle in the roadway that was stopped and

began braking. Smits was not able to bring his vehicle to a stop and as a result rear

ended Vehicle #3. In an attempt to avoid striking Vehicle #3, Smits swerved into

the opposing lane and struck Vehicle #2.

During the investigation motor vehicle traffic was restricted to one lane of

travel along US Route 7. Members of the Vergennes Area Rescue Squad and the

Vergennes Fire Department responded to the scene and assisted.
