Arlington, VT – On Wednesday night, January 4th at approximately 10:27 pm the Vermont State Police received a 911 call reporting a deceased elderly female inside a residence located at 440 Buck Hill Road in Arlington, VT.  The caller was identified as the victim's neighbor who had just been alerted by a friend of the victim.  The friend of the victim reportedly went to check on the victim at the request of an out of state family member and discovered the victim deceased.  A Bennington County Sheriff's Deputy was in the area and responded to the residence.  The Sheriff's Deputy confirmed the victim was deceased and notified the Vermont State Police to conduct a death investigation.

Upon initial response, a State Police detective observed evidence of a suspected homicide.  The scene was secured and the Vermont State Police Major Crime Unit responded to lead this investigation.  Detectives with the Bureau of Criminal Investigations and the Crime Scene Search Team responded to assist.  The deceased has been preliminarily  identified as the sole resident at this address, Helen Jones, age 81.  Next of kin have been notified.

This investigation is in its early stages and is ongoing.  Once the crime scene is processed, the deceased will be transported to the Office of the Chief Medical Examiner in Burlington, VT for autopsy in order to determine cause and manner of death.  Investigators are working closely with the Bennington County State's Attorney's Office.

Vermont State Police investigators are interested in speaking with anyone who has information regarding suspicious activity in the area of Buck Hill Road in Arlington during this past week or anyone who has had contact with the victim or her associates.  Anyone with information is asked to call the Vermont State Police at 802-442-5421.
