SUMMARY:
On January 5th, 2017 at approximately 2333 hours the Vermont State Police, St. Albans were notified of a 911 call advising that a vehicle was travelling southbound in the northbound lanes of I-89 in the area of mile marker 113. Subsequent 911 calls confirmed that a vehicle was continuing to travel southbound in the passing lane of I-89 northbound. The vehicle in violation had narrowly escaped at least three head on crashes involving vehicles travelling northbound. Troopers responded in an attempt to intercept the vehicle before an inevitable collision occurred.

A St. Albans City Police Officer who was travelling north at the time from Chittenden Regional Correctional Facility overheard radio traffic detailing the unfolding incident. The officer encountered the vehicle travelling southbound in the northbound passing lane and safely conducted a motor vehicle stop on it in the area of mile marker 108.

Troopers responding to the scene conducted an investigation that revealed the operator, Patricia Guerrera (age 56) to be operating a motor vehicle while under the influence of alcohol. Guerrera was placed under arrest and transported to the St. Albans State Police Barracks for processing. At the conclusion of processing she was transported to Detox. Guerrera was issued a citation to appear before Franklin County Superior Court on February 21st, 2017 to answer the charges of DUI Refusal and Grossly Negligent Operation of a Motor Vehicle.
