UPDATE - NEWBURY HOMICIDE

 

December 7, 2016 - Preliminary autopsy results returned today in the death of Barbara Welch (76) of Newbury indicate the cause and manner of death to be gunshot to the head and homicide.  Preliminary autopsy results returned today in the death of Kenneth Welch (80) of Newbury indicate the cause and manner of death to be gunshot to the head and suicide. 

 

The Vermont State Police Major Crime Unit continues to investigate, however there continues to be no evidence indicating any third party was involved in this incident.  No other information is available at this time.

On 12/05/16 at approximately 2308 hours, Troopers from the St Johnsbury barracks responded to 340 Welch road in the town of Newbury to conduct a welfare check on residents Kenneth Welch (80) and Barbara Welch (76).  A relative of the residents had contacted State Police advising that they had received a call from Kenneth indicating that he had shot his wife. 

 

Upon arrival, Troopers forced entry to the residence and found a male and female who's descriptions matched both deceased of apparent gunshot wounds.  Both were pronounced deceased by Woodsville Rescue. 

 

The Major Crime Unit and the Crime Scene Search Team have been activated and are in the process of investigating the incident.   At this time, investigation has not revealed any third party involved in this incident.
