SUMMARY OF INCIDENT:

On 12-08-16 at approximately 0155 hrs the Newport City Fire Department responded to a reported structure fire at 23 Conway Court in Coventry. A neighbor had called in the fire. Upon the  arrival of fire personnel they found heavy fire in the center area of home.  They called for assistance in attacking the fire and fire departments from Irasburg and Orleans assisted on scene.  The building sustained heavy fire and water damage.  Damage was estimated at approximately $100,000. The tenant was not home at the time of the fire.  Upon being notified the tenant ran over from his neighbors and entered the house to attempt to locate and remove his three dogs.  The tenant lost consciousness and was rescued by members of the Newport Fire Department. He was then transported to North Country Hospital with unknown injuries.

The Newport City Fire Chief James LeClair contacted the Vermont State Police and requested an origin and cause investigation of the fire. Two Detectives from the Vermont State Police Fire Investigation Unit and two investigators from the VT. Division of Fire Safety responded on 12-08-17 to the scene.

Investigators have determined that the fire cause is undetermined at this time and not suspicious. The investigation is ongoing.  The tenant is expected to be released later today. Anyone with information about the fire is asked to contact the Vermont State Police (Detective Sergeant Otis) at the Westminster Barracks at 802-722-4600
