SUMMARY OF INCIDENT:

On October 7th at approximately 1527 hours, the Vermont State Police along with the Underhill Jericho Fire Department, Colchester Technical Rescue, Stowe Mountain Rescue, and Essex Rescue responded to the Underhill State Park for a report of two hikers that had become lost while on a day hike on Mt. Mansfield.  The hikers were able to call 911 and provide information regarding the trails that they had taken on their hike, and indicated that they had hiked off the trail and were lost.  A GPS location was obtained from the hikers 911 call which helped first responders determine that the lost hikers were in the area of Cantilever Rock.  A team from UJFD as well as a team from Colchester Technical Rescue were able to locate the lost hikers on an outcropping above Cantilever Rock.  Steep terrain, loss of daylight, and high winds complicated the rescue efforts.  The hikers were eventually able to walk out uninjured with the assistance of the UJFD and Colchester Technical Rescue teams.  The lost hikers were identified as Rebecca Cohen and Jennifer Desrosiers, both 32 years of age, and both of Worcester, Massachusetts.
