SUMMARY OF CRASH:

On September 30, 2016 at approximately 1731 hours, Troopers from the Vermont State Police-Rutland Barracks responded to a two-car motor vehicle crash near the intersection of US Route 7 South and Seward Road in Rutland Town.

Preliminary investigation revealed that operator # 1 (David W. Bentley) was traveling south in the #2 (passing lane) of US Route 7 while operator #2 (James N. Marsh) was also traveling south on the same road, in the left turn lane for Seward Road. Operator #2 indicated he intended to turn left, onto Seward Road. As vehicle #2 approached vehicle #1 and began to pass on its left, operator #1 changed lanes into the same left turn lane which vehicle #2 was occupying, causing the left side of vehicle #1 to strike the right/front corner of vehicle #2. Operator #1 advised he didn’t see vehicle #2 in the lane.

No one was injured as a result of the crash. Northbound traffic was delayed for a short time while the vehicles were moved from the roadway under their own power. Operator #1 (Bentley) was found at fault for the crash and in violation of Title 23 V.S.A. 1038, Driving on roadways laned for traffic. Additionally, operator #1 was issued multiple Vermont Civil Violation Complaints including a ticket for having an unrestrained child inside the vehicle at the time of the crash.
