Tractor trailer fire, RT 123, Westminster

VEHICLE: 2009 Freightliner tractor trailer

 

SUMMARY OF INCIDENT:

 

On 9/2/16 at 12:17 Vermont State Police, Walpole, NH Police, and Westminster

Fire responded to a report of a tractor trailer truck that was stuck under the

railroad bridge and on fire on RT 123 in Westminster. It was determined that the

operator, Joseph Walkins, Jr. was attempting to cross under the bridge when he

decided his 2009 Freightliner truck was too big to go under. Walkins backed the

truck unit up and was then flagged down by another motorist that told him his

truck was on fire. Walkins attempted to extinguish the fire but it re ignited

and became fully involved in flames. The cab and front part of the trailer were

completely burned up. There were no injuries. The contents of the trailer was

non hazardous. RT 123 and RT 5 were both closed for over an hour until the fire

was completely extinguished. Both roadways were partially closed for approx.

8 hours until the tractor trailer unit could be hauled away. The cause of the mechanical fire is still unknown at this time.
