SUMMARY OF CRASH:  On September 8, 2016 at approximately 6:59 AM the Vermont State Police in Royalton received a report of a single vehicle crash on US Route 5 in North Hartland, VT.  There were few details about the seriousness of crash, so Hartford Ambulance and Hartland Fire Department were dispatched to the scene.  During the initial assessment of the operator it was determined he sustained minor injuries due to the seatbelt and airbag deployment that required medical attention.  The operator, Austin Shepard, age 16, was transported to DHMC for treatment.  There were no other occupants in the vehicle at the time of the crash.  Evidence at the scene and information provided by Shepard confirmed that he was driving north bound on Route 5 when the vehicle traveled off the right shoulder and lost control.  The vehicle traveled a distance of approximately 50 feet from the edge of the road where it struck a tree before coming to rest in a corn field.  The vehicle sustained damage to the right side, roof and frame, totaling the vehicle.
