SUMMARY OF INCIDENT:

On 08/10/16 at approximately 1130 hours, VSP Westminster received a call from a resident of the Town of Newfane. It was reported that the caller was the victim of a fraud. The investigation revealed that the victim had filled out several on line surveys and provided limited personal information when completing the survey. Weeks after filling out the surveys, the victim received a letter offering her part time employment as a mystery shopper. The victim received a check for $3973.00. The victim cashed the check, completed two mystery shopper evaluations and then sent over $2300.00 via Western Union and Walmart Money Gram back to representatives in New York and Canada. In the days after cashing the check and wiring the money, the cashed check was found to be a forgery. This is a common fraud perpetrated on unsuspecting victims.
