SUMMARY OF CRASH:

On July 3, 2016, at approximately 1636 hours, members of the Vermont State Police were notified of a two car motor vehicle crash, which took place on Mill Pond Road in Benson Vermont.  It was also reported that one operator left the scene of the crash. On arrival, Troopers observed a single, unoccupied vehicle off the road and in ditch.

Investigation determined this incident to be a single motor vehicle crash as no contact was made to any other vehicles. The operator, later identified as Dillon Whitney (19), and his juvenile passenger had walked away from the vehicle and were located down the roadway.

After being located, Whitney (19) and the juvenile passenger were treated by first responders.

The juvenile passenger was evaluated on scene by first responders as well as Fair Haven Rescue before being transported and admitted to Rutland Regional medical Center for further evaluation.  Whitney was also evaluated on scene.  It was determined the passenger was not wearing a seatbelt.

The investigation revealed that Whitney was cresting a hill and swerved to avoid a collision with oncoming traffic.  In the process Whitney lost control of the vehicle and went off the roadway

This crash was caused by Whitney failing to keep to the right, which is a violation of Title 23, VSA, Subsection 1031.

Further investigation determined Whitney’s privilege to operate a motor vehicle was Civilly Suspended as well as an active arrest warrant.  Whitney was taken into custody and transported to Marble Valley Correctional Center where he was lodged.
