VSP Rutland Press Release - Multiple Charges / Lodging - Pittsford, Vermont - VSP Case # 16C102370

ACCUSED: John Charbonneau

AGE: 49

CITY, STATE OF RESIDENCE: Rutland City, Vermont  


SUMMARY OF INCIDENT: On the above date, the Vermont State Police were notified of a burglary in progress from a private residence on Vermont Route 3 in the Town of Pittsford, Vermont.  Subsequently, Captain Washburn from the Rutland Town Police Department and Troopers from the Rutland Barracks responded to the area. The perpetrator, known to responding Troopers as Burglar John Charbonneau of Rutland, Vermont, was found walking in the immediate area matching the description of the suspect.  Upon seeing a responding Trooper he fled into a wooded area off Stevens Road.  Charbonneau was being followed by a neighbor of the victim in a vehicle.  This neighbor pointed Troopers in the correct direction where they found Charbonneau after a short foot pursuit. 


Charbonneau had torn a large portion of his pant leg off and had superficial cuts and bruises from fleeing the police.  He was taken into custody without further incident.  A large amount of loose change and approximately $5,000.00 in jewelry was taken from the 85 year old victim's residence.  Some of this jewelry and change were recovered from Charbonneau's person.  At the time of this burglary, the victim was not at the residence and the home was unoccupied.    


At the time of this incident, Charbonneau in the Rutland area community on conditions of release that had been issued from the Rutland Superior Court.  These conditions stem from another burglary / habitual offender charge that Charbonneau had prior to this date.      


Regional Ambulance Service assisted at this scene after Charbonneau claimed a medical condition after being taken into custody.  He was ultimately treated and released to the State Police after being seen at the Rutland Regional Medical Center.  Charbonneau faces the above listed charges and is scheduled to appear in court on 05/16/2016 at 12:30 PM.
