SUMMARY OF INCIDENT:
On the above date and time the State Police and Vermont Fish and Wildlife were dispatched to a hunting incident which occurred in a cut corn field adjacent to River Road in the town of Moretown. It was reported that a 16 year old female had been struck by several shotgun pellets while hunting from a ground blind. The victim suffered very minor injuries which did not require medical treatment.
Upon their arrival the investigating Troopers and State Game Warden Sean Fowler determined that the victim was turkey hunting from a ground blind on the edge of a field. 150 to 200 yards away from the victim, another hunter, Peter Noack, and his son were hunting from a separate hunting blind, also along the edge of the field. Neither the victim or Noack knew the other was hunting the same field.
A short time before the shooting incident several wild turkeys were reported to have arrived in the field, which got the attention of the operator of a passing vehicle. That operator reportedly got out of his vehicle and attempted to stalk the flock of turkeys. This spooked the turkeys which and started to travel toward the wood line, between where the victim and Noack were positioned.
At that time Noack exited his ground blind and walked along the edge of the wood line, in the direction the turkeys were headed. Noack positioned himself behind a tree and as the turkeys were entering the woods he took one shot with a 12 gauge shotgun. About 70-80 yards from where Noack shot, the victim was positioned inside her camouflage hunting blind just inside the wood line. Noack reported that he did not see the victim's blind when he shot.
This incident is being jointly investigated by the Vermont State Police and the Vermont Fish and Wildlife, Enforcement Division.
Once complete a copy of the investigation will be sent to the Washington County States Attorney’s Office for review.
