SUMMARY OF INCIDENT:
Starting in January 2016 until April of 2016 Law Enforcement officers throughout Bennington County, Vermont and Berkshire County, Massachusetts responded to numerous burglaries, thefts from motor vehicles and fraud complaints. These complaints were all very similar in nature. Thorough investigating and information sharing by law enforcement partners in Bennington County, led to a suspect who was identified as Nicholas Leonard (29) of Bennington, VT.
On April 5, 2016 Leonard was arrested in Lanesborough, MA by Lanesborough Police Department on an arrest warrant out of Massachusetts. This arrest led to the recovery of numerous stolen items from Bennington County, VT as well as Massachusetts. A search warrant executed at Leonard’s residence by Vermont authorities led to the recovery of additional stolen items.
Due to the large number of complaints, the amount of items recovered and the complexity of these investigations, police continue to thoroughly investigate these and other crimes possibly committed by Leonard in the Bennington County area. At the completion of this investigation an arrest warrant will be requested for crimes Leonard committed in Vermont.
Manchester Police Department, Bennington Police Department and the Vermont State Police are all working together on these investigations to bring them to a successful conclusion.
Police will be contacting victims of these crimes soon to assist in the identification of the property recovered. We request anyone who believes they may have had items stolen recently to please contact the Vermont State Police, Shaftsbury Barracks or their local police department.
Leonard is currently being held at Berkshire County House of Corrections in Massachusetts without bail on the arrest warrant and other criminal charges in Massachusetts
